Today we are publishing information about the Board Charter and qualifications for service on the Governing Board. During the General Conference in Acapulco, we elected our first term of Governing Board members. Elections for the next terms will be held during the 2013 General Conference in Chicago.

Our Nominations Committee is excited about the prospect of many, excellent and diverse candidates, and would like your help to recruit potential nominees. Serving on the Governing Board is an opportunity for clergy and laity to labor together on a unified, global MCC Board.  This Board partners with the Moderator and the Elders to facilitate tasks and to support the continuation of the momentum in ministry that we have been building. This Board also works with our leadership and staff to creatively develop the resources to keep us moving forward into the future. To date, the Board has expanded its reach and work through teams that have already grown to include people who are not on the Board itself, whose gifts are crucial to their work.

Consideration will be given to elect members with diverse perspectives, core competencies, and complementary skills consistent with the required functions and responsibilities of the Governing Board.”

Denomination Job Opening – Program Support/Data Analyst

Program Support/Data Analyst for Metropolitan Community Churches

This position is responsible for ongoing analysis of tithe/membership information, obtained from a variety of sources, including tithe reports, annual reports, surveys, registration databases and demographic data. It involves development and preparation of information products for MCC staff and members. It requires the ability to analyze data from conceptualization through presentation of the data. It requires proficiency with analytical tools, knowledge of data analysis methodology, use of presentation software, strong communication skills and a strong commitment to and affinity for delivering the highest level of customer service. Additional duties of this position relate to posting information to the MCC website, and as such the position requires a basic level of skill with web content management systems and blogging software.

The description below covers the primary duties and skills required for success as Program Support Analyst/Data Analyst.

Primary duties

  • Accurately recording tithe and membership information
  • Analysis and reporting of tithe and membership data
  • Developing standardized reports and custom analysis using tithe and membership data
  • Posting documents to the appropriate place on the MCC website
  • Assist with MCC website maintenance through content management system (WordPress primarily).

 

Required skills:

  • Demonstrated experience and expertise with Excel
  • Demonstrated experience using advanced Excel features and techniques
  • Demonstrated experience in analysis and presentation of data required
  • Experience working with a variety of information systems and data files, including large and complex files: analyzing file structure, using and creating file layouts, transforming raw data into finished products
  • Ability to consult with data users to formulate analysis request parameters
  • Database application development and maintenance (e.g., church databases)
  • Excellent personal communication skills, both written and spoken
  • Ability to work independently, with experience working in a team environment
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to use computer hardware and software
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Detail oriented
  • Creative
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required
  • Proficiency in WordPress or equivalent is strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in Constant Contact is a plus

 

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in relevant field

Metropolitan Community Church Leader Responds to
Arrest of Brandon Hamm, Volunteer MCC Pastor 

The Peninsula Metropolitan Community Church recently learned that Brandon Hamm, a volunteer minister, was arrested on 22 June 2012 on charges related to child pornography. Hamm was held, and on 26 June, charged with multiple felony counts of engaging in a lewd act with a minor through social media.

When the news reached The Peninsula MCC and leaders at the Metropolitan Community Churches, officials immediately followed pre-established procedures to respond to arrests or allegations by suspending Brandon Hamm’s license to be a minister within MCC until the investigation and legal proceedings are completed. All MCC ministers annually read and sign a code of conduct that explicitly prohibits “abuse or exploitation of minors.”

The Rev. Dr. Nancy Wilson, Moderator of Metropolitan Community Churches, said, “Leaders, pastors and members of Metropolitan Community Churches are shocked by these allegations. We serve people across the world, and we are committed to creating safe sanctuary for all of our members and community participants. MCC leaders have taken appropriate initial actions and are monitoring developments. It is important to remember that an investigation is in process, and it is in the hands of police authorities. As always, we seek God’s guidance and pray for every person who is impacted.”

2012 Leadership Mentoring Retreat

An important leadership development program is being offered by MCC, and I want to encourage the people of MCC in Europe to apply. The MCC Leadership Mentoring Retreat will take place in Ellenton, Florida (USA), 16-19 January 2012. Transportation can be coordinated from either of the two nearest airports: Sarasota/Bradenton (SRQ) and Tampa (TPA).

 

The application deadline has just been extended to 1 December 2011.

 

As a special incentive, MCC has offered a travel supplement of up to £250 to people from Europe who are selected by the Moderator to participate in the Retreat. Those who are selected to participate in the Retreat and want to receive the travel supplement should contact Rev. Elder Darlene Garner <> as soon as the notice of acceptance is received.

Connie Meadows Announces Her Retirement

Connie Meadows 2011Connie Meadows will retire in December 2011, after serving for 5 1/2 years on MCC staff in the role of the Moderator’s Assistant. Connie started working for Rev. Nancy Wilson when she was pastor of Church of the Trinity MCC in Sarasota, Florida, in 2002.  Connie volunteered at the church office and made a significant contribution there as Rev. Wilson’s assistant. When Rev. Elder Wilson became Moderator in 2005, Connie joined her on staff with MCC at the denominational level.

 

Rev. Dr. Nancy Wilson had this to say, “Connie speaks 6 languages and was a corporate planner in the Hague years ago in the insurance industry, and she had run her own successful business here in the U.S. She was new to MCC but ‘got it’ right away! It was clear to me she had the special kinds of organizational skills that could support me as I succeeded Rev. Perry and set up a new Moderator’s Office here in Florida. I knew that Connie was a gift to me and to us and that she was the perfect person to help me as we helped MCC make this transition. Connie traveled to meetings and conferences, many times at her own expense, and contributed enormously to moving MCC into the global arena. She also got an M.A. in Theology along the way so as to more deeply appreciate and contribute to her work with me, the Elders, and our boards and teams over the years.  Connie has been the ‘detail person’ who helped me be prepared to travel and work in many challenging contexts. I have always appreciated her clarity, honesty, work ethic, devotion to the cause, and the ways she has ‘looked out’ for me.  I am grateful to have met her and had the privilege to work with her.  I know she will continue to serve me in various ways, as needed, in her retirement. At the same time, I know her partner Haviland will be glad to have more time for them to travel and enjoy retirement together.”

International Task Force Steering Committee Meeting Update

Following our very successful first face-to-face meeting in May 2011, Mark Dalgleish (Group Grace), Carol Scherfenberg (Group Hope) and Jochen Gewecke (Group Faith) of the International Task Force (ITF) Steering Committee met once again from 22nd to 24th September, along with Raquel Benitez (Governing Board), Rev. Hector Gutierrez (Staff) and Marina Laws (Staff) in Toronto (Ontario, Canada). The ITF continues to make progress towards presenting their final report to General Conference in 2013.

During the 3 days of conversation, we were fortunate enough to hold face-to-face meetings with Rev. Dr. Nancy Wilson (Moderator), Rev. Elder Don Eastman and Rev. Tom Decker, as well as hold group Skype calls with Rev. Dr. Mona West (OFLD), Rev. Elder Darlene Garner (OEM), Dr. Christopher Duraisingh (Episcopal Divinity School) and Rev. Dr. Robert Griffin, along with written input from Barb Crabtree (Operations Director) and Rev. Stedney Phillips (Staff).

We would invite you all to follow our progress and offer suggestions via the ITF web page.

The group would like to thank Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes and the Board and Members of MCC Toronto for their generous hospitality and support in assisting the important work in furthering the goals of MCC in the world today.

Theologies Team Survey

 

Since our first meeting in December 2007, we have been working on a number of projects that support our vision of equipping everyone in MCC to be both reflective and practical theologians.

Descriptive Theologies Project

We’re excited to announce the launch of our new Descriptive Theologies project, designed with three goals in mind:

  1. To provide an accurate picture of practices “on the ground” in our churches around the world;
  2. To facilitate our understanding of who we are as a denomination/movement; and,
  3. To help us identify areas where the MCC Theologies Team may assist our churches.

We want to hear from you!

Our goal is to survey as widely as possible, soliciting responses from every individual associated with MCC in any way. Our short questionnaire has three sections for you to describe your experiences around baptism, to tell us what you were taught, and to tell us about your current beliefs around this important topic.

Continuing on work begun at the 2007 General Conference in Phoenix and the Holy Conversations congregational resource, we’ve designed our first surveys around the Sacrament of Baptism. Visit the survey page, and choose the Baptism survey for individuals.

The password for the survey is Baptism2011.

It is case sensitive, so make sure to use a capital B and lowercase letters for the rest.

Go Purple for Spirit Day

For the second year, GLAAD is promoting Spirit Day. Many of you may remember Spirit Day more as “Wear Purple” Day and “Turn Facebook Purple” Day. It was developed by a high school student in Canada who wanted to show support for those LGBTQI youth being bullied.

This year, Spirit Day is Thursday, 20 October 2011.Metropolitan Community Churches and The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries join together in asking all our churches and affiliate ministries to support this important day by wearing purple to stand in solidarity with our LGBTQI youth. We also ask you to consider posting supportive comments on your facebook pages and to tweet with hashtag #SpiritDay.

Rev. Dr. Nancy Wilson, Moderator, reminds us: “LGBT people have made significant contributions to the world throughout history. We have a spiritual contribution to make in this century that has begun with so much chaos and violence, and we are able to express love and passion for justice in ways that move others to action.”

The focus is women empowering women to assume leadership roles in their communities by developing the trusting relationships essential to achieving social justice. This conference is open to women, transwomen and those who identify themselves as women who are
interested in improving their leadership skills and connecting with others in the common pursuit for social justice.

Clergywomen are eligible to receive continuing education units. This
conference is intentionally designed for all women, both clergy and lay
leaders.

In Memory of Dr. Frank Kameny

In Memory of Dr. Frank Kameny

A brave soul transitioned yesterday, 11 October 2011.  In true Frank fashion, he left us on National Coming Out Day here in the U.S.

Rev. Troy Perry, Founder, remembers Dr. Kameny:

In 1969, I met Dr. Kameny, who was a hero in what we then called the “homophile” movement.  I was impressed with his clear conviction that civil rights should be afforded to everyone.  Through all the changes in history in the years since the 1950s, when he was outed and then became an activist, he continued the fight, and he was always a supporter of the ministry of MCC.

Rev. Dr. Nancy Wilson, Moderator, recalls:

Dr. Frank Kameny was a fearless pioneer for gay rights, in the days before Stonewall.  I met Dr. Kameny when he and the late Barbara Gittings came to speak at Allegheny College, when I was 19 years old, over 40 years ago.  Their courage astounded me, even as I struggled to understand how their story was my story.

I was still closeted then, even to myself, but their honest, open telling of their stories was the first clue I had that there were others like me. There are not adequate words to express the impact on my life of their visit to our small, liberal arts, religiously-connected school.  I know that Dr. Kameny was the first publically open gay man that many of us ever met.

Dr. Kameny faced unbelievable discrimination, scorn, and opposition, but he became single-minded in his devotion to civil rights.  He and others picketed the White House in 1965 and pushed to have the American Psychiatric Association stop labeling gay people as mentally ill.  Along with Rev. Troy Perry, and a handful of others, his courage and determination changed the world for all of us.

Later I met Dr. Kameny again, as I became involved in the leadership of MCC.  Though not a religious person, he was always very respectful of the role of MCC.  ‘May his memory be for a blessing.’

All of the people in MCC around the world today owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Kameny, and together we mourn his passing.

Job Description:
Spirit of Hope MCC (Metropolitan Community Church) is seeking a full-time Director of Congregational Life. This dynamic and well-organized individual will provide leadership and oversight to Spirit of Hope MCC ministries, including affinity/small groups that enhance the spiritual development and spiritual growth of the congregation. Spirit of Hope MCC is a LGBT inclusive community, which is open and welcoming to all persons no matter their station in life.A successful candidate will report to the Senior Pastor and must;

 Be able to create and communicate a vision for small groups and ministries
 Be highly motivated and well organized in all activities.
 Be skilled and able to promote the development and growth of a diversity of small groups and ministries, helping groups effectively launch, grow, and multiply
 Be able to identify talent and recruit capable people into responsible positions; delegate appropriately; invite and maintain constant dialog avenues; communicate expectations clearlyand hold people accountable
 Be skilled in developing lay leaders who will coordinate programs and activities that address the
congregation’s spiritual needs
 Ensure that every small group and ministry clearly promotes the vision and mission of Spirit of Hope MCC.
 Be willing and able to work effectively with individuals – both internally and externally – who are diverse in race, gender, sexual orientation and identity, religious/spiritual background, and
worship experience
 Be able to understand the congregation’s Culture of Christ and be able to help teach it regularly to our congregation.
 Share in the responsibility for providing Pastoral Care of the congregation
 The candidate may be asked to preach, administer rites and sacraments at the invitation of theSenior Pastor.

Core Functions & Duties:
The successful candidate must;

 Develop a network of spiritually gifted coaches, leaders, mentors, and apprentices who can lead people toward spiritual maturity in small group settings
 Develop, coordinate and promote leadership training for ministry and small group leaders
 Develop a program for evaluating the performance of small group leaders and the functioning of their groups
 Be well organized. and
 Be well prepared for leading and teaching in various roles
 Be outgoing in connecting with individuals to learn about their hopes in ministry
 Maintain a database for each ministry and assist ministry leaders in using the database
 Network with other congregations to develop and share a resource base of small group expertise
 Work with ministry leaders to prepare budget requests and assist ministries with fundraising efforts
 Lead the development of a process for following up with and connecting with visitors and continue to be responsible for the process after it is developed
 Lead appropriate sections of new member classes, lead classes on “Christ Culture”, and inclusive language classes.
 Participate in weekly staff team meetings
 Meet weekly with the Senior Pastor

Requirements:

 MCC or UCC clergy credentials and M.Div. preferred. Will consider applications from other candidates whose theology aligns with the core values and mission of Spirit of Hope MCC.
 Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills, highly motivated and well organized.
 Active in the GLBTQII community as either an ally or activist. Knowledgable about GLBTQII

issues and passions.

 Skilled at using MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) and Servant Keeper or similar church software
 Is widely trusted; seen as direct and truthful; keeps confidences; admits mistakes; acts in harmony with the core values of Spirit of Hope MCC; supports all staff members (lay or clergy) in word and actions

Benefits/Compensation Classification: Full time – salaried (exempt)

Governing Board Appointment Announcement
MCC’s Governing Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Kareem Murphy to the Governing Board. Kareem will serve a two-year term until the 2013 General Conference XXV in Chicago, Illinois (USA). At such time, the General Conference will elect a Lay Person to complete the remaining three years on this unexpired term, ending at 2016 General Conference XXVI.

Office of Formation and Leadership Development Announces Associate Director

Rev. Dr. Mona West states, “I had the privilege to work alongside Kharma as a volunteer when we implemented the new credentialling system with the REVM program. More recently in my current role as the Director of the OFLD, I have called on her numerous times to serve on ordination interview teams and advisory boards. I know her to be a person of great integrity, and she has a passion for leadership development–especially clergy development–in MCC.  I am excited about the ways her creativity and professionalism, as well as her training and experience, will shape the future of the OFLD and MCC. It’s going to be a joy (and a lot of fun!) to have her as a team member!”

 

Kharma holds the Master of Divinity degree from Lancaster Theological Seminary, where she is currently on the Board of Trustees.  She completed her Doctor of Ministry degree at Episcopal Divinity School, writing a thesis titled, Queering Church: Integrating Queer Theology in Congregational Life in Metropolitan Community Churches.  She is currently the chair of MCC’s Theologies Team and was accepted as a participant into the inaugural Moderator’s Leadership Mentoring Retreat in January 2010.  From 2003-2005, she participated in the First Parish Project, funded by the Lilly Endowment, for the purpose of supporting young clergy as they transition from seminary to serving their first parish as solo or senior pastors.

The Office of Formation and Leadership Development was formerly known as Clergy Development. The change in the name represents the larger vision that MCC has for leadership development in our
denomination. As our name states, we believe that leadership has a formative component to it, which includes not only education, but spiritual development and community. Clergy development, including working with seminary students, conducting the REVM (Readiness for Vocational Ministry Retreat) and issuing licenses to practice for currently active clergy is still at the heart of what the Office of Formation and Leadership Development does. We have also expanded our work to include the development and launch of a leadership training program for MCC laity called L.E.A.D. (Laity Empowered for Active Discipleship).

In addition, we have partnered with the Moderator’s Office to develop Leadership Mentoring Retreats and with the Office of Church Life and Health to create the next level of church summits in the areas of programming and worship.

The OFLD functions globally through faculty teams and volunteer coordinators who assist in creating and implementing leadership development protocols that are indigenous to each country where there is an MCC presence. The current paid staff for this office are Rev. Dr. Mona West, Director, Rev. Dr. Kharma Amos, Associate Director, and Ritchie Crownfield, Executive Assistant.

Theologies Team Invites You to Participate in Survey

 

Since our first meeting in December 2007, we have been working on a number of projects that support our vision of equipping everyone in MCC to be both reflective and practical theologians.

Descriptive Theologies Project

We’re excited to announce the launch of our new Descriptive Theologies project, designed with three goals in mind:

1.     To provide an accurate picture of practices “on the ground” in our churches around the world;

2.     To facilitate our understanding of who we are as a denomination/movement; and,

3.     To help us identify areas where the MCC Theologies Team may assist our churches.

Our goal is to survey as widely as possible, soliciting responses from every individual associated with MCC in any way. Our short questionnaire has three sections for you to describe your experiences around baptism, to tell us what you were taught, and to tell us about your current beliefs around this important topic.

Continuing on work begun at the 2007 General Conference in Phoenix and the Holy Conversations congregational resource, we’ve designed our first surveys around the Sacrament of Baptism. Visit the survey page, and choose the Baptism survey for individuals.

 

The password for the survey is Baptism2011.

It is case sensitive, so make sure to use a capital B and lowercase letters for the rest.

Clergy Retreat Update

 

Clergy Retreat 2011

Thirty clergy from places as far away as Hawaii and Canada gathered at Delray Beach, Florida (USA), on 12-14 September for a clergy retreat. There was opportunity for people to network and connect
as well as to enter into silent reflection and renewal. We also had some great intellectual stimulation from our plenary speaker, Diana Butler Bass. She shared material from her new book Christianity After
Religion, which included statistics about the ways in which Christianity as we have known it is changing – shifting to what she and others are calling ‘the age of the Spirit’ with a focus on personal experience as the primary source of religious authority. Based on the feedback, the OFLD will begin offering clergy
retreats on a yearly basis at a variety of locations. We hope to see you at the next one!

The OFLD is grateful to MCC Austin for providing a $1000 (USD) grant that allowed four MCC Clergy to attend the retreat. We also want to say thanks to Rev. Dr. Robert Griffin and the Sunshine Cathedral for their assistance with the retreat.

Metropolitan Community Churches and The Fellowship, presents The Holy Trust Conference. The focus is women empowering women to assume leadership roles in their communities by developing the trusting relationships essential to achieving social justice. This conference is open to women, transwomen and those who identify themselves as women who are
interested in improving their leadership skills and connecting with others in the common pursuit for social justice.

 

Clergywomen are eligible to receive continuing education units. This
conference is intentionally designed for all women, both clergy and lay
leaders.

MCC Leaders Respond to Resignation of the Rev. Mark Bidwell

Metropolitan Community Church Leaders Respond to
Resignation of the Rev. Mark Bidwell

Top leaders of the Metropolitan Community Church expressed shock and sadness about recent events that the Rev. Mark Bidwell was in the company of Mr. Steven Fitch when Mr. Fitch apparently died of a drug overdose.  Details of the September 21 events came to attention through a police report that became public on September 27.

The Rev. Dr. Nancy Wilson, Moderator of the Metropolitan Community Church, said, “We are deeply saddened whenever drug addiction impacts an individual or a community.  No community across this country is immune from the scourge of illegal drugs, but when it hits close to home, we are reminded of the commitment we have to teach people about the harms of drug abuse and to be a place of spiritual healing for those who are recovering.”

Ms. Jackie Walker, member of MCC Detroit, said, “MCC national and local leaders are responding in every responsible and appropriate way to learn what happened and to care for the congregation.  Our Elders are working with the church board and members and are offering assistance and pastoral care.”

Church officials received notice late on September 27 that Pastor Bidwell was with Mr. Fitch on September 21 when illegal drugs were allegedly in use.  In less than a day, Rev. Bidwell was suspended from duties until all the facts could be ascertained.  Rev. Bidwell has since resigned as pastor of MCC Detroit.

Rev. Wilson said, “MCC Detroit’s forty-year ministry is extraordinary.  We have asked our whole denomination and partners in faith to pray for this congregation as they deal with the shock and pain from these events.  We know that God is with them and will be with them as they face this crisis with courage and faith.”
